A message from Pastor Michael
You have probably heard us talking about the “Transition Team,” but maybe you’re not really sure who they are and what they have been doing.
The Transition Team was created last year as we prepared to vacate the sanctuary in anticipation of our construction start date. This team thought through all the logistics of moving worship to the gym and how that was going to impact everything from traffic flow to Sunday school.
After the fire, the Transition Team was reconstituted to take a 30,000 ft view of how we use all our space on campus AND to see what changes we needed to make to the gym with the reality that we will have to worship there much longer than anticipated.
Sunday, July 30th is the date that much of their work will be revealed. When you arrive for worship on that Sunday, you will notice big changes in the worship space. There are rumors of new, more comfortable chairs. I have heard there will be changes in visibility and acoustics. I hope you will make plans to be in worship on July 30th (which is also the conclusion of our Unchained sermon series), to see for yourself just how our worship space has transformed.
In the meantime, be sure to thank all the members of the Transition Team who have given so much of themselves.
Joe Geraghty, Chair
Grace and peace,
Advent Staff Update
A message from Carlie Peden
To the Students and Congregation of Advent UMC,
I want to start by expressing my gratitude for the time I have been blessed with serving on staff at Advent. I have loved being Advent’s Assistant Director of Student Ministries. I am very thankful for the past two years and the experience and knowledge I have gained by being here and learning from those around me. I have loved serving the church in this way and building relationships with the students in our congregation and beyond. It has been a wonderful adventure that I will never forget!
With that said, I feel that God is calling me to serve in another area. I have spent several months praying about this and seeking advice, and I have decided to pursue a job in my field of study. While attending Clemson, I studied Therapeutic Recreation, and since graduating in 2014, I have been working in the church. I have loved working in the church, but I feel as if the Lord is asking me to try what I went to school for. I wrestled with this decision for a while, but after realizing this is not an either/or situation but rather a both/and situation, I received a sense of peace that I feel can only be from God.
Advent has always been and will always be home for me, and I would like to continue to be involved in this church as an active member and volunteer in the Student Ministry program.
Thank you for your support, love, encouragement and understanding during this bitter sweet decision and time in my life.
Advent UMC will serve at Harvest Hope on Saturday, August 19, 2017, from 9:00 till 11:30 am. Please complete sign-up here if you would like to join us. The minimum age is 10 years old. You may contact Helen Landmesser at Helenlandmess@gmail.com with questions.

Operation Christmas Child at Advent UMC
Have you been looking for a fun, hands-on, service opportunity involving the whole family that will also “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19), but unsure how to do that? We’ve got just the thing!
Starting July 9th, YOU will be able to reach out to others around the world sharing God’s love. Through this simple shoebox gift, you and your family can help change the world, one life at a time. Shoeboxes can be filled with school supplies, small toys, hygiene items, and a note of encouragement for a child overseas who may be suffering due to disaster, disease, war, terrorism, famine, or poverty. So, pick up your shoebox today and let’s all make a difference one shoebox at a time. A suggestion list is included in each shoebox but if you want more ideas, please go to samaritanspurse.org. Any questions contact Susan at email@example.com or Jennifer at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please return your boxes by July 29th.
This year’s OCC drive at Advent is dedicated to the memory of Bob Yount. Mr. Yount firmly believed in following Jesus and giving to others. He wanted every child to know they are loved by Jesus and his followers. Mr. Yount had a great passion for Samaritan’s Purse. He enjoyed volunteering as a driver taking shoeboxes to the distribution center for Operation Christmas Child.
Our Christmas offering in 2016 was given to Homes of Hope through the South Carolina UMC Poverty Initiative. Advent’s offering will help specifically with the Men’s Ministry of Homes of Hope. This amazing ministry offers a second step for men recovering from addictions. Through the ministry, men live in community, participate in Bible study and also learn skills through the building of homes that earns them a certification from Greenville Tech. Homes of Hope has invited us to help with the building of the homes that our Christmas offering will help build!
Dates for the build include June 22, 23 & 24; July 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, & 29; August 3, 4 & 5 and September 2.
Please use this sign up to let us know if you can join us! Volunteers must be 16 years or older. Thank you! Sign-up to Volunteer!

New Email for the Advent Care Team
The Advent Care Team recently had a group email box created to streamline any care needs. This email box is monitored by the care team and depending on the need we will pull in the necessary team members to best handle the request. The care team continues to serve through prayers, cards, meals and prayer shawls. Please reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more about how we serve our congregation.
In the event of bad weather, we will communicate the status of the church in reference to closing via Facebook, email, website, WYFF Channel 4, WSPA Channel 7, and the church voicemail.
